A Medieval fort and basilica church on the summit of a rocky mountain outcrop, Abruzzo, Italy

The Rocca di Calascio is the highest fortress of the Apennines at 1,512 metres above sea level. Its construction began in the 10th century but it was never rebuilt after being severely damaged in an earthquake in November 1461. At a slighter lower elevation, the octagonal church of Santa Maria della Pietà was built in the 17th century.
