A colony of common, or harbour, seals (Phoca vitulina) rests on rocks at high tide during sunset in the deserted crofting settlement of Valamus, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

The abandoned village of Bhalamus (Valamus) on the southern extreme of the remote and uninhabited south Pairc peninsula (Eishken estate, South Lochs, Lewis, Western Isles) is home to over 100 common seals. At high tide, their favourite resting places are almost submerged, giving the impression that they are laying on the surface of the shallow inlet.
